School Counselor

About Me:
Hello! My name is Heather Burton. This is my 9th year as a school counselor. I graduated from Ball State University and earned my master's in school counseling at Butler University. I have worked in both the elementary and intermediate school settings. My husband and I live in Zionsville with our three children, ages 6, 4, and 2. Most weekends we are busy with sports but enjoy watching movies together when there is down time. I feel very blessed to work with the families at Trailside!
Please reach out if you are in need of any support.
You can reach me via email, phone, or parent square.

What does an elementary school counselor do?
Elementary school is an important time for children to build not only academic skills but also confidence, friendships, and healthy ways to manage emotions. The school counselor is here to support students in all of these areas.
- Academic Growth – Counselors support students with building skills for learning, executive functioning skills, goal setting, and more.
- Social Skills – We teach and model positive behaviors like teamwork, kindness, and conflict resolution so students can build strong friendships.
- Emotional Support – Counselors help children recognize and manage their feelings, cope with challenges, and build resilience.
- College/Career Readiness - Counselors help students explore their interests, set goals, practice teamwork, and see how learning connects to the real world.
- Family Partnership – We work closely with parents and caregivers, providing resources, communication, and support when questions or concerns arise.
- Safe Space – Sometimes children just need someone to listen. The counselor is a trusted adult they can turn to when they’re worried, upset, or unsure.
The goal of the elementary counselor is to help every child feel safe, supported, and ready to learn—both in the classroom and in life.
